Le Distancing : Prendre du recul en anglais (Passive of Reporting Verbs)

Le distancing (ou impersonal reporting) est une construction anglaise qui permet de prendre du recul par rapport à une information. Au lieu de citer une source (“Paul says the project failed”), on utilise la voix passive pour rendre la formulation neutre et professionnelle (“The project is said to have failed”). C’est LA structure de référence pour les rapports, e-mails de synthèse et comptes-rendus de réunion — et elle est quasi intraduisible en français.

💡 Pourquoi c’est utile ? En pro, dire “Paul says the deadline was missed” accuse Paul. Dire “The deadline is said to have been missed” rapporte le même fait sans nommer la source. Utile quand tu n’as pas envie de pointer du doigt un collègue, ou que tu cites une rumeur.

1. Le principe et la structure du distancing

La forme active (classique)

On a une source qui fait une déclaration.

  • Paul says the project failed.
  • The media reported that sales dropped 15%.
  • Experts believe inflation will rise.

La forme distancing (passive)

On cache la source (parce qu’on ne veut pas la nommer, ou qu’elle est inconnue, ou qu’on veut rester neutre).

  • The project is said to have failed.
  • Sales were reported to have dropped 15%.
  • Inflation is believed to rise.

📌 Le piège francophone : un apprenant français traduit souvent “On dit que le projet a échoué” par “They say that the project failed”. La forme naturelle anglaise est “The project is said to have failed” — passif + infinitif passé.

La mécanique en 4 points

  1. Sujet : la chose dont on parle (pas la source).
  2. Be conjugué : présent (is/are) ou passé (was/were) selon le moment où on rapporte.
  3. Reporting verb au PARTICIPE PASSÉ : said, reported, believed, claimed, alleged, considered, known, thought, expected, understood.
  4. To + infinitif : si on parle du présent/futur, to be / to do. Si on parle du passé, to have + participe passé.
Temps du rapport Structure Exemple
Présent is/are + reporting verb au PP + to + base verbale He is said to be rich.
Passé is/are + reporting verb au PP + to have + PP He is said to have been rich.
Futur is/are + reporting verb au PP + to be going to / to + base verbale He is expected to resign tomorrow.

📌 L’auxiliaire be se conjugue comme n’importe quel autre passif : is/are au présent, was/were au passé. Le reporting verb reste toujours au participe passé (3e colonne).

2. Les 8 reporting verbs les plus utiles en B2 pro

Reporting verb (passive) Nuance Exemple
is said to On dit que (rumeur générale, source floue) The CEO is said to be considering a merger.
is reported to Selon des sources (presse, média) Sales are reported to have fallen by 12%.
is believed to On croit que (opinion générale) She is believed to be the best candidate.
is expected to On s’attend à (prévision) Inflation is expected to rise next quarter.
is known to On sait que (information confirmée) He is known to have worked in Bordeaux for 10 years.
is claimed to On prétend que (souvent douteux, allégation) The drug is claimed to cure cancer. (⚠️ prudence)
is thought to On pense que (supposition informée) The suspect is thought to have fled to Spain.
is alleged to On allègue que (souvent juridique, police) He is alleged to have leaked the data.

📌 Au téléphone pro à Pau, tu entendras souvent “The deal is reported to be worth €50M”. C’est la formulation de référence du Financial Times et des e-mails Bloomberg.

3. Distancing au PRÉSENT : la forme la plus courante

Structure : sujet + is/are + reporting verb PP + to + base verbale

  • The deadline is expected to be next Monday. (On s’attend à ce que la deadline soit lundi prochain.)
  • The new CFO is believed to come from Total. (Le nouveau CFO viendrait de Total.)
  • Talks are said to be at an advanced stage. (Les discussions en seraient à un stade avancé.)

Verbes d’état (be, exist, belong) — attention à la forme

Pour les verbes d’état (be, exist, belong, own), la forme distancing ne change pas : to be / to exist.

  • He is said to be the richest man in Pau. ✅
  • He is said to being ❌ (jamais “to being”)

Verbes d’action (go, do, work, resign) — forme standard

  • She is reported to have left the company. (Elle aurait quitté la société.)
  • The team is thought to be working on a new project. (L’équipe travaillerait sur un nouveau projet.)

4. Distancing au PASSÉ : to have + participe passé

Quand tu rapportes un fait passé, tu dois utiliser to have + participe passé.

  • The project is said to have failed. (Le projet aurait échoué.)
  • The CEO is believed to have resigned. (Le PDG aurait démissionné.)
  • The two companies were reported to have merged in 2025. (Les deux entreprises auraient fusionné en 2025.)

📌 Piège classique : un francophone écrit souvent “is said to failed” en voulant dire “aurait échoué”. La forme correcte est is said to have failed (have + participe passé).

Cas particuliers : “It is said that…” vs “He is said to…”

Les deux formes existent. La forme “It is said that…” est plus lourde et plus rare en anglais courant. La forme “sujet + is said to + infinitif” est préférée dans 90% des cas.

Forme Verdict Exemple
It is said that the project failed. Correct mais rare —
The project is said to have failed. ✅ Préféré Plus court, plus naturel
It is believed that he left. Correct mais rare —
He is believed to have left. ✅ Préféré Standard dans la presse pro

💡 Règle pratique : si tu peux transformer ta phrase en sujet + is + reporting verb + to, fais-le. C’est plus court et plus idiomatique.

5. Le cas “people say” vs “it is said” + Distancing en contexte pro

Traduire “On dit que…” : trois options

Le français “On dit que…” se traduit de trois façons :

Option 1 : People say (that)… (avec un sujet générique)

  • People say the project failed.
  • People believe inflation will rise.

Option 2 : It is said (that)… (impersonnel classique)

  • It is said that the project failed.
  • It is believed that inflation will rise.

Option 3 (PRÉFÉRÉE en B2 pro) : The project is said to have failed (distancing)

  • The project is said to have failed.
  • Inflation is believed to be rising.

💡 En B2 pro, privilégie l’option 3. C’est la forme utilisée dans les rapports, e-mails et presse spécialisée. Les options 1 et 2 sont plus parlées, moins écrites.

Distancing dans un e-mail pro à Pau

Contexte : tu écris à un client pour expliquer un retard

  • The supplier says there was a delay (accusation directe)
  • A delay is reported to have occurred at our supplier’s site. ✅ (neutre, factuel)

Contexte : tu rapportes une rumeur sur un concurrent

  • People think Total will buy our competitor (informel)
  • Our competitor is believed to be the target of a Total acquisition. ✅ (formel, distancié)

Contexte : tu annonces une décision à venir

  • They will probably announce a new CFO (vague)
  • A new CFO is expected to be announced in the coming weeks. ✅ (pro, distancé)

📌 Tom utilise régulièrement cette structure dans ses e-mails à des clients paloisiens : “The session is expected to last approximately 90 minutes”, “Materials are said to be provided by the student”. C’est devenu un réflexe.

6. Pièges francophones fréquents

Piège n°1 : Oublier le “to”

  • He is said be rich ❌
  • He is said to be rich ✅

Piège n°2 : Confondre infinitif présent et infinitif passé

  • “Le projet aurait échoué” = passé → The project is said to have failed ✅
  • “Le projet est censé échouer” = futur/présumé → The project is said to fail (rare) ou is expected to fail (préféré)

Piège n°3 : Mettre “that” après le reporting verb au passif

  • The project is said that it failed ❌ (double construction)
  • The project is said to have failed ✅

Piège n°4 : Confondre said et told

  • He said me… ❌ (jamais de CO direct avec say)
  • He said to me… (rare, peu idiomatique)
  • He told me… ✅ (verbe régulier pour le CO direct)

Piège n°5 : Confondre be said to et be supposed to

  • He is supposed to be rich. (= il est censé être riche, on l’imagine)
  • He is said to be rich. (= on dit qu’il est riche, source floue)
  • Sens très proches, mais supposed to implique une attente/présomption, said to implique une rumeur.

Piège n°6 : “According to” — ne pas confondre avec le distancing

  • According to Paul, the project failed. (= Paul dit que — source claire)
  • The project is said to have failed. (= on dit que — source floue)
  • Les deux coexistent : According to cite, is said to distancie.

7. Résumé en tableau

Structure Temps Exemple Traduction
Sujet + is + reporting verb PP + to + base verbale Présent/futur He is said to be rich. On dit qu’il est riche.
Sujet + is + reporting verb PP + to have + PP Passé He is said to have been rich. On dit qu’il a été riche.
Sujet + was + reporting verb PP + to have + PP Rapport au passé He was said to have been rich. On disait qu’il avait été riche.
It + is + reporting verb + that + phrase Présent It is said that he is rich. On dit qu’il est riche. (rare)

📌 La règle d’or : si tu hésites entre is said to do et is said to have done, demande-toi si l’action est terminée ou non. Si elle est terminée (hier, l’an dernier, il y a 10 ans) → to have + PP. Si elle est en cours ou à venir → to + base verbale.
