Le Présent Continu (ou Présent en -ING) est utilisé pour parler d’actions qui se déroulent maintenant, au moment où l’on parle.
1. Structure
On utilise le verbe TO BE au présent + le verbe principal avec la terminaison -ING.
| Sujet | Conjugaison | Exemple |
|---|---|---|
| I | I am working | I’m working now. |
| You | You are playing | You’re playing tennis. |
| He / She / It | She is eating | She’s eating an apple. |
| We | We are going | We’re going home. |
| They | They are watching | They’re watching TV. |
2. La Forme Négative
On ajoute simplement not après le verbe be.
- I am not (I’m not) listening.
- She is not (isn’t) crying.
- They are not (aren’t) sleeping.
3. La Forme Interrogative
On inverse le sujet et le verbe be.
- Are you listening to me?
- Is he working today?
- What are they doing?
4. Règles d’orthographe pour le -ING
- Règle générale : on ajoute -ing. (Eat -> Eating).
- Verbes en -e : on enlève le e. (Dance -> Dancing, Write -> Writing).
- Verbes courts (C-V-C) : on double la consonne. (Run -> Running, Swim -> Swimming, Sit -> Sitting).
5. Quand l’utiliser ?
- Action en cours : Quelque chose qui se passe à l’instant T.
- “Look! It is raining.”
- Action temporaire : Quelque chose qui se passe en ce moment (ces jours-ci).
- “I am reading a very good book.” (Pas forcément à la seconde même).
💡 Attention au piège : Présent Simple vs Continu
- Simple (Habitude) : I drink coffee every morning.
- Continu (Maintenant) : I am drinking coffee right now.
