Was et Were : Le verbe 'To Be' au Passé

Le verbe To Be est spécial, même au passé. Contrairement aux autres verbes, il ne prend pas de “-ed” et n’utilise pas l’auxiliaire did. Il possède deux formes : Was et Were.

1. La Forme Affirmative

SujetPassé de BEExemple
IWasI was happy.
YouWereYou were late.
He / She / ItWasShe was at home.
WeWereWe were tired.
TheyWereThey were in London.
  • Yesterday, I was at school. (Hier, j’étais à l’école).
  • They were my friends. (C’étaient mes amis).

2. La Forme Négative

On ajoute simplement not après was ou were. Les formes contractées sont très courantes.

  • Was not -> Wasn’t
    • He wasn’t at the party.
  • Were not -> Weren’t
    • They weren’t hungry.

3. La Forme Interrogative

On inverse le sujet et le verbe. Pas besoin de DID !

  • Was she your teacher? (Était-elle ta professeure ?)
  • Were you at the cinema last night?
  • Where were you yesterday?

4. Réponses Courtes

Comme au présent, on reprend le sujet et le verbe.

  • Was it cold? -> Yes, it was. / No, it wasn’t.
  • Were they late? -> Yes, they were. / No, they weren’t.

💡 Attention aux erreurs classiques !

  • Erreur : Did you be at home? -> Correction : Were you at home?
  • Erreur : I weren’t happy. -> Correction : I wasn’t happy.
  • Erreur : We was tired. -> Correction : We were tired.
